Kayla has a background in urban and regional planning with a Masters degree in Planning from the University of Calgary. During the program she was employed as a teaching assistant for two planning studios and gained internship experience in both municipal planning and consulting. Upon graduation, Kayla was awarded the APPI Danny Makale Silver Medallion for an outstanding capstone project and high academic standing.

Kayla also has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of British Columbia, with a focus in marketing. She began her career in the private sector in 2012, in residential construction for custom homes and multi-family developments. Within these roles she gained experience in budgeting, project management and communications.

Working as a community planner in the B&A team she is involved in land planning and assessment, developing of statutory and nonstatutory policy including outline/neighbourhood plans and land use bylaws/ amendments. She is also proficient in GIS mapping and assists with technical and graphical analysis.
