We’re excited to introduce four new members of the B&A family. We believe strongly in recruiting and retaining the best and the brightest in our field. Mark, Brian, Heather and Fernando certainly fit this criteria and bring top talent with a wealth of diverse experience across the private and municipal development sectors. They share in our passion to create better communities, together!
Mark Spence joined us on February 1, 2017 from the City of Airdrie where he held the role of Senior Planner. Over the past seven years he focused on introducing creative community concept ideas for one of Canada’s fastest growing municipalities. Mark also has a track record of planning and designing innovative neighbourhoods, master planned communities and commercial developments throughout California, and has done some work as far away as China, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Mark was born and raised in Winnipeg and holds a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Geography and a Master of City Planning degree from the University of Manitoba. He has a passion for learning new innovative ideas that help shape the places where we live.
At B&A, Mark will work closely with our Master Planning & Urban Design group to further optimize growth and deliver exceptional results for our clients.
Brian brings over 15 years of experience in planning and urban development. In 2013, he was recognized as one of Edmonton’s Top 40 under 40. Brian holds multiple awards for his planning projects from the Canadian Institute of Planners, the Alberta Professional Planners Institute, and the International Downtown Association.
Over the past ten years, Brian has played an instrumental role in shaping the City of Edmonton’s City Planning branch. Originally from Ontario, Brian moved to Edmonton in 2007 to join the Sustainable Development department at the City where he worked his way from a Planning Technician to a Director of Business Strategy and Operations and Acting Director of Urban Policy. Brian has led numerous business publications such as business and strategic plans, as well as planning and policy publications including ‘Edmonton’s Urban Design Framework’ along with B&A’s Sonny Tomic.
At B&A Brian leads-up our newly launched Edmonton office. His strong relationships and experience in municipal policies and processes help our clients in the Region achieve project success. He works hand-in-hand with the Calgary-based B&A team of 40+ professionals to leverage the full suite of in-house services including Planning, Urban Design, GIS, 3D & Technical Services along with Communications & Engagement.
Heather joins B&A Planning Group after spending the 6 years with the City of Calgary’s Planning and Developing Department. With experience leading projects in both the suburban and inner city context, Heather brings to the firm an understanding of both new community subdivision design and infill redevelopment from a municipal perspective.
Her expertise lies in the project management and coordination of complex planning applications including concurrent land use amendment and outline plans as well as concurrent land use amendments and development permits. She has excellent working relationships with City of Calgary Administration, in-depth knowledge of the city’s planning policy and firm understanding of the planning system and processes.
At B&A, Heather will be focusing on working with existing and new clients within two of our primary service sectors: Master Planning & Urban Design and Land Use & Development Approvals within the City of Calgary. She formally starts with us March 1, 2017.
