Belmont Station Receives Approval and Recognition for Exceptional Neighbourhood Planning

On February 25, 2019, Calgary City Council unanimously approved Belmont Station, a comprehensively planned TOD neighbourhood at the south end of the planned LRT Red Line extension.

Belmont land use design

B&A has supported DOMAIN apartments in the development of an Outline Plan, Land Use Redesignation and Policy Amendment for their 80 acres of land immediately west of the LRT Station/Maintenance Facility and north of 210 Avenue SE.

Belmont Station has been planned as a mid-rise, pedestrian-scale, transit-supportive, mixed-use neighbourhood. The area will be home to nearly 7000 future residents and approximately 50,000 sf of retail storefronts; offering shopping, entertainment, recreation and education within walking distance.

At the heart of the neighbourhood is a series of public/private park spaces, termed the Green Axis, that will connect pedestrians and cyclists to the LRT station area. The Park system offers three unique areas to recreate that becomes progressively more urban the approach to the Main Street Retail Area adjacent the LRT and offers the highest residential building heights with potential for two 16 storey point towers atop a commercial podium.

  1. Belmont Green Common Park: a traditional green lawn with playground with residential frontages;
  2. Belmont Square Park: a plaza with retail ready frontages, spill out cafes and public art installations;
  3. Belmont Plaza Park: a central park space that features markets, gardens, private community functions, ample gathering spaces and seating. The area is encircled by a one-way public street couplet and retail/commercial frontages on either side of the block.

The conceptual visioning for the neighbourhood would not have been possible without partnership with Humphreys & Partners Urban Architecture. The images provided herein are a result of that partnership along with the Landscape Architecture visioning from Scatliff+Miller+Murray. Establishing collaborative teams amongst others that excel in their field is a key to B&A’s success in all planning endeavours.

Receiving unanimous Council Approval for the Land Use Amendment represents the first major milestone in the process for the development of this exciting new transit-oriented neighbourhood in south Calgary. We look forward to continuing to support the development in the next phases.
